If you're able to consume it under a shorter period, kudos to you, mostly because the film's hypnotic power grows on your ability to completely immerse yourself in, and endure, its sheer colossal length. The fact that it takes Fassbinder so long to tell this story ultimately becomes a theme itself.  Their screenplay, which was based on the Gideon Rath detective series created by Volker Kutscher, is set in the same time period and location as Fassbinderâs series - late 1920s Berlin - and makes an interesting comparison piece. Didn't I give it my best shot? the parables being constantly told over the reconstruction of the original murder, a broken rib, the serpent is not only in a manâs soul, but in everywhere surrounding him too, and what follows is guilt, punishment and death. Having spent the last 4 years in prison for killing his girlfriend, Fassbinder makes no illusions that this is someone we should root for. It is such a weird series. 2, Late last year I watched the first two seasons of Babylon Berlin (2017), written and directed by Tom Twyker (who wrote the first essay in the booklet that is part of the Criterion Collection box set of Berlin Alexanderplatz), Hendrik Handloegten and Achim Borries. Miserablist over-achiever Rainer Werner Fassbinder forged a career on enfabled social commentary then coronated it with this, his magnum opus, a 15½ hour adaptation of Alfred Döblin's pioneering 1929 novel Berlin Alexanderplatz. A culmination of Fassbinder's work and raw talent thus far. So I'm not a decent guy. Is it my fault? Okay, so you're right.
