But on the multi-core test, the Threadripper 1920X absolutely destroys last year's Core i7-6950X—which debuted at almost twice the 1920X's $799 price! The other issue with X399 motherboards is their cost. Let's dig in. Test: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X . That said, both the Threadripper and Core i9 chips deliver high enough frame rates to satisfy all but the most discerning high-fps game junkie. The Threadripper models lead the Intel competition at stock and overclocked settings. Compare this with the upcoming 18-core Intel Core i9-7980XE, which Intel has revealed will have a low 2.6GHz base clock. There was a problem. And if you really need more performance from your high-end chip in heavily threaded tasks, you should probably just shell out the extra $200 or so for the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, and run it at stock. A graduate of the first class of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, his work has appeared in Popular Science, Consumer Reports, Smithsonian, and elsewhere in the ether. Creator Mode is enabled by default, and it offers the best performance for tackling tasks that like lots of threads. The single-core test only uses one CPU core, the amount of cores or hyperthreading ability doesn't count. In this last CPU test, the Threadripper 1920X again took the lead over the Core i9-7900X, although the difference was only about 4 percent. Even then, the upcoming 18-core Core i9-7980XE has a suggested price of $2,000, twice that of the top Threadripper chip. The big, $999 beastie, 1950X, … The underlying architecture of Threadripper, Epyc, and the mainstream Ryzen chips is the same "Zen" design found in the initial Ryzen 7 chips. We're not arguing with the logic of that, but the fact is: 1080p is still a wildly popular gaming resolution, and one that is also favored by competitive gamers with high-refresh-rate 1080p screens. Future US, Inc. 11 West 42nd Street, 15th Floor, Visit our corporate site. Now, how did the Ryzen Threadripper 1920X shake out versus the 1950X and the Intel competition? Just factor in the high cost of motherboards and cooling into your build budget. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X and 1920X Review Today is a critically important day for AMD. In addition, for a look at the best of what AMD's and Intel's more mainstream computing platforms have to offer, we included the eight-core/16-thread AMD Ryzen 7 1800X and the four-core/eight-thread Intel Core i7-7700K. For our formal comparisons, we also threw in the eight-core Core i7-7820X (also a Core X-Series chip), which we were in the process of reviewing. If you click an affiliate link and buy a product or service, we may be paid a fee by that merchant. On thread-hungry tests and tasks, the Ryzen 7 1800X and Core i7-7700K won't stand a chance against the 32-thread Threadripper 1950X or the 24-thread Threadripper 1920X. Not that physical chip size really matters in a desktop PC, but Intel's competing Core X-Series chips measure about 2 inches by 1.75 inches, and the Ryzen chips are even smaller. The Threadripper package even has two separate sets of contacts and components on the bottom, with a visible line running between them. Rather than go into more detail about how XFR works here, please see our review of the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X, in which we delved into it in some detail. If you just want a general sense of how the platform shapes up in terms of modern features, you can get a pretty good sense by studying the diagram below, provided by AMD... One thing we will point out here is the fact that AMD provides 64 PCI Express lanes with all of its Ryzen Threadripper chips. And you'll need a robust cooler (preferably a self-contained liquid model, though an air cooler is an option) to keep Threadripper chilled—especially if you intend to overclock. And compared to the current-generation 10-core Core i9-7900X, the Threadripper 1920X did about 13 percent better while selling for $200 less. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X review - Performance - CineBench by Hilbert Hagedoorn. You will save $200, though, because the Threadripper 1920X is priced at $799, while the 1950X rings up at $999. still sells for between $1,500 and $1,700. Tags: #amd-zen #ryzen #socket-tr4 #threadripper #tr4 #x399. It's also fairly obvious that Threadripper chips are the result of effectively bolting a pair of Ryzen modules together at a silicon level. But at least at this early stage, that's not the case with Threadripper. This test was interesting for a couple of reasons. But before we jump to that, let's talk about the three Ryzen Threadripper processors that AMD has announced so far. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X and 1920X Review. Both Skylake-X-based processors fall to the bottom of our chart in their stock configuration, which doesn't make sense given superior host processing resources. We stuck all those components into Mean:It's tempered-glass 5PM case, and used Thermaltake's new Floe Riing 360 RGB for CPU cooling. Open shopping cart. PCMag.com is a leading authority on technology, delivering Labs-based, independent reviews of the latest products and services. Its 12 cores and 24 threads are still mighty capable (and capably mighty), and its 3.5GHz base clock is actually a tick higher than the 3.4GHz base of the higher-end Ryzen Threadripper 1950X. And on the plus side (albeit superficially), the retail packaging is unusually interesting. If you aren't a professional video creator and/or very, very serious about running a game-streaming empire on your platform of choice (where you might be playing a game and streaming it at a high bit rate, while also encoding a previous match so you can upload an edited video), you probably don't need quite that much CPU muscle. The overclocked Intel processors lead, while AMD's Ryzen models populate the lower half of our chart. AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 1920X Processor. GPU: AMD Radeon RX VEGA 56. More important is the more than 20 percent difference between the Core i7-6950X and the Threadripper 1920X. First, AMD is able to keep its base and boost clock speeds quite high, even on the chips with the highest core counts. Along with the usual test that makes use of all available cores, we've added the single-core results here to get a sense of how AMD's new chip fares in lightly threaded workloads. Similarly to the 1950X, it has a base clock speed of 3.5 GHz (3.4 GHz for the 1950X) which can boost to a maximum of 4.0 GHz and features quad channel DDR4 and 64 PCI Express lanes. By Jarred Walton 10 August 2017. Our Threadripper 1920X turned in an average frame rate of 125 frames per second (fps) in Creator Mode, and a negligible bit less (124fps) in Game Mode. First up in our testing regimen: Maxon's CPU-crunching Cinebench R15 test, which is fully threaded to make use of all available processor cores and threads, using the CPU rather than the GPU to render a complex image. Also in our charts from Intel is the Core i7-6900K, a previous-generation eight-core chip that sells for around $1,000, about the same price as the top-end Ryzen Threadripper 1950X. If you're one of them, your chips are here. And for some perspective about how far we've come in just a little over a year, we also included performance numbers for Intel's "Broadwell-E" Core i7-6950X Extreme Edition. RAM: 32GB (8GB x 4) G.SKILL Trident-Z RGB DDR4-3200 MHz CL14. Using the same settings as we used for the Threadripper 1950X (that is, setting the voltage at a rather high 1.325 volts, which was expressly suggested by AMD), we were able to get the Threadripper 1920X stable with all cores clocked at 4GHz, 500MHz above the 3.5GHz base clock. At the 4GHz overclock, we saw our Cinebench multi-threaded score jump from 2,436 to 2,608 (a jump of about 7 percent). Great review as always but on the power consumption fron given that the 1950x has six more cores and the 1920 has two more they are more power efficient than the 7900x is every regard relative to the high stock clocks of the TR, "Ryzen Threadripper 1920X comes arms with 12 physical cores and SMT", Your sister site Anandtech did a retest of Threadripper a while back and found that their original form of game mode was more effective than the one supplied by AMD. Cryptocurrency miners and data scientists will likely appreciate it, but for gamers and enthusiasts, 64 lanes is arguably overkill. Share this page . The 1900X has been promised to launch at the end of August 2017. They are culled from the manufacturing process and set aside. Blender is an open-source 3D content-creation program that can be used to design and create visual effects, animation, and 3D models for use in video games or 3D printing. (More on this later.). Next up, using the "All CPUs" setting, we ran the POV-Ray benchmark, which challenges all available cores to render a complex photo-realistic image using ray tracing. This is a time-consuming test of video-crunching capabilities. Boasting 12 high-performance cores capable of harnessing 24 parallel threads, the Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 2920X is the processor of choice when you need to game, stream and create at the same time. And predictably, the current-generation Intel chips did better on that front, as Intel generally has both higher clock speeds and better IPC (instructions per clock) than AMD. It packs 12 cores and has the ability to handle up to 24 simultaneous threads, thanks to the company's Simultaneous Multi-threading Technology (SMT), which is similar to Intel's Hyper-Threading. Interestingly, the two Threadripper chips were effectively tied on the single-core test. That's at least in part because Threadripper is pretty much a straight-up consumer-focused clone of the AMD's (also new) Epyc server line. And, as we saw in testing the 1950X, it wasn't easy for even a 360mm liquid cooler to keep the Threadripper chip all that cool, especially when overclocking. It has a base clock of 3.4GHz and tops out at the same 4GHz. By now, many enthusiasts know the story of AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ processors: powerful creative performance, smooth gaming, and an uncompromising platform with tons of ports and lanes. Meanwhile, Intel's Core i7-7820X suffers severe frame time variance that manifests as visible stuttering. This year, first there was the eight-core, 16-thread Ryzen 7 chips that made their debut in March. The 1920X leads over the 1950X in both stock and overclocked configurations. You'll often find him writing while walking on his treadmill desk, surrounded by heaps of consumer tech. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X Review. This is important because, as we've seen recently when testing both Intel and AMD chips, systems based around these recent CPUs tend to perform better when gaming at 1080p with faster-clocked RAM. Threadripper 1920X sports 12 fed by 38MB of cache, quad-channel memory, and 64 PCIe lanes - all for $800, compared to Intel’s $1000 Core i9-7900X. How many computing threads do you actually need? Paul Alcorn, Byzantine installation process compared to mainstream CPUs. To get that game to launch, we had to enable Game Mode. In fact, in these two games, the Threadripper 1950X actually performed better than the Core i9-7900X. Long gone are the times of taking days off (literally) for "rasterizing and rendering" of work flows. Stock boost clocks between the two chips are the same, at 4GHz. If video crunching or similar tasks aren't something you do all the time, or if you have the need but $799 is still a bit rich for you, you may want to wait a bit. That Intel "Extreme Edition" chip debuted at almost $1,000 more than the 1920X less than a year ago when we wrote this, and it's now trailing well behind not AMD's best chip, but the company's second-best Threadripper offering. Here's a look at Threadripper bracketed by an ordinary Ryzen (to the left) and a Core X-Series (in the box at right). Not that this is a major issue, but it's tough to ignore in a brand-new platform when Intel's competing chips are far smaller and aren't as obviously separate modules paired together. Here's a detailed look at the specs of the the two chips that are available today, direct from AMD... As noted earlier, the company also has in the pipeline an eight-core "entry-level" Ryzen Threadripper 1900X that will list for $549, with a high 3.8GHz base clock and the same 4GHz top clock as the other two chips. You wouldn't buy a $799, $999, or even pricier CPU from Intel or AMD to do primarily that kind of thing, in any case. Similarly to the 1950X, it has a base clock speed of 3.5 GHz (3.4 GHz for the 1950X) which can boost to a maximum of 4.0 GHz and features quad channel DDR4 and 64 PCI Express lanes. We open a standard test file (it's of a flying squirrel) and time how long the test processor takes to finish the render. This is, in some ways, similar to the lineage of Intel's enthusiast chips, such as the new Core X-Series, which are effectively retooled versions of its Xeon server and enterprise processors. There are just more modules here, providing more cores and threads. At $799, AMD's 12-core Threadripper chip skips along ahead of Intel's competing $999 Core i9 on core-happy computing tasks, while costing a couple of hundred bucks less. Igor Wallossek (Unless, maybe, you're planning to drop four of AMD's also-new AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 cards into your new X399 build. Wildly extreme 32-thread performance, for the same price as Intel's new 20-thread Core X-Series CPU. Additionally, Epyc includes a two-socket option, making possible systems with a crazy-to-imagine 128 threads in a single system. PSU: Cooler Master V1200 Platinum . Considering there aren't a whole lot of time-consuming tasks in computing that are still limited to single computing core or thread, we're chalking AMD's showing here to "good enough." Otherwise, it would just stall at the startup screen. © MB: ASUS Prime X399-A. In other words, some games prefer more cores, while others prefer less latency. And they were all priced at $339 and up. The short answer is probably, although the same caveats about Threadripper remain with this chip. Both of AMD's current Ryzen Threadripper chips feature 512K per-core of L2 cache (8MB total on the 1950X and 6MB on the 1920X), quad-channel memory controllers (2+2), … Given the company's attempted dismissal of 1080p in its press materials, we thought the Threadripper chips might exhibit serious issues when pushing a high-end video card at that resolution. AMD Ryzen Threadripper is an unashamed attempt to rip the performance legs off Intel's best consumer CPUs to date. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X vs Intel Atom S1240: 22. Thank you for signing up to Tom's Hardware. The setup was powered by a (probably overkill) Thermaltake Toughpower Grand 1200 power supply. The result is a proprietary score indicating a PC's suitability for processor-intensive workloads. An Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition video card handled display output for our CPU-specific tests, and a Samsung SSD 960 Pro was our boot drive. Technically, the chip can burst up to 4.2GHz on up to four cores if you have adequate cooling, a feature that AMD calls XFR, or Extended Frequency Range. The 16-core Threadripper 1950X takes the top spot in the multi-threaded test once again, but this time around the Core i9-7900X is able to pull ahead of the Threadripper 1920X… 16 cores provide an astonishing 32 threads of simultaneous multi-processing power, while 40MB of combined cache and vast I/O from the enthusiast-grade AMD X399 platform stand ready to feed the beast. One other thing of possible concern is cooling. At this point, the only thing "extreme" about the Core i7-6950X is its pricing. The Asus ROG Zenith Extreme we used for testing was priced at $549. All that said, a couple of the X399 motherboards already have mail-in rebates, indicating that pricing may fall soon after launch. But it's fair to say that, in part because Epyc is itself brand-new (the company just launched Epyc in June 2017), the Threadripper chips and platform aren't quite as refined as Intel's competing offerings are. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X vs Intel Xeon E5-2637 v3: 21. It's AMD to the rescue again, though, as it stands to offer 12 cores for just £799 and 16 for £999 with the Ryzen Threadripper 1920X and Ryzen Threadripper 1950X respectively. The only issue with that approach is that you may run into games that won't launch without some cores disabled, as we did with Far Cry Primal and the Threadripper chips. We tasked the CPUs to convert a 12-minute-and-14-second 4K .MOV file (the 4K showcase short film Tears of Steel) into a 1080p MPEG-4 video…. Matt is a self-described Net nerd, gadget geek, and general connoisseur of off-kilter culture. Clearly, though, if you're doing lots of video editing, crunching through things like 4K video in a time-sensitive professional environment, the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X may be worth paying an extra $200 for. Also, there's no denying that 12 cores is still wanton excess for many PC users. This should make the upcoming Threadripper 1900X far more appealing as a lower-cost entry point to AMD's enthusiast platform than, say, Intel's own "entry-level" Core X-Series silicon, the so-called "Kaby Lake X" chips. It may be worth waiting for new coolers that do a better job of covering a larger portion of the CPU's heat spreader. And unlike with Intel's competing Core X-Series platform, you get the same 64 lanes of PCI Express with Threadripper, no matter which compatible chip you choose to drop into your motherboard. A stock Core i7-7700K dominates this test. However, both the -7900X and -7700K do suffer significant frame time outliers. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X vs Intel Xeon Gold 6146: 20. https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/amd-ryzen-threadripper-1920x. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X and Threadripper 1920X put up some serious numbers in the various SANDRA tests we threw at them. But we'll have to wait for Intel's even higher-end Core i9 chips to arrive for the Threadripper 1950X to have any real competition on tasks that gobble up cores and threads. Companies: #amd… When we wrote this in the days just after the chips' launch, there were just six X399 motherboards available from Newegg, the same six we saw at a Threadripper briefing a couple of weeks before the launch. With all of this action in high-end desktop processors, 2017 may go down (in the minds of PC enthusiasts, at least) as the year of "more cores for the masses." Then came Intel's Core X-Series/Core i9 response at Computex 2017 in June. There is, after all, a pretty big gulf between 20 threads and the Threadripper 1950X's 32 threads. Don't let us stop you now.). Outperforms Intel's pricier Core i9 chip on core-hungry tests. But the nimble Ryzen 7 1800X also demonstrates the value of a much less expensive platform. This newsletter may contain advertising, deals, or affiliate links. But note that if you want the best possible gaming performance at or around 1080p resolution, you're better off with a chip with fewer cores and higher clocks, like the Core i7-7700K. What they had done is disable SMT and have a 16c/16t CPU instead of the 8c/16t that AMD's game mode does. For our test setup, we dropped the Ryzen Threadripper 1920X into the Asus ROG Zenith Extreme we mentioned earlier on, along with 32GB of G Skill Trident Z RGB memory running in a quad-channel setup. But as this is physically, by far, the biggest consumer processor in the last several years, existing coolers cover only the central portion of the chip. Several existing liquid coolers have been cleared by AMD to work with these chips. Cinema 4 is a worldwide used software to create 3D forms. We've listed the parts below. AMD has been long out of this league of enthusiast-class CPUs, and it shows in some obvious and not-so-obvious ways. And while the 12-core 1920X didn't quite leave the Core i9-7900X eating silicon dust, the 1920X's showing is still impressive given the Intel competition costs about $200 more. That one is Intel's original 10-core consumer chip, which debuted in May of 2016 and (somehow!) Both results again bested the Core i9-7900X's 91fps on the same test. As for our test-bed, we built a Threadripper benchmarking PC based on an install kit that AMD supplied us. First, we fired up late 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider in DirectX 11 mode at the Very High preset and ran the built-in benchmark. On the whole, we found little not to like about the Ryzen Threadripper 1920X. Get Yours. For serious Enthusiasts, Prosumers and Creators, AMD designed the new 2nd Gen Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 2920X. Game Mode disables a number of cores (the amount depends on the chip) and tweaks the RAM performance to favor gaming. Get Yours . With X399 boards starting at about $100 more than entry-level Intel X299 offerings, the price advantage of this chip over a $1,000 Core i9 is effectively sliced in half. Last, we fired up the popular 7-Zip file-compression software and ran its built-in compression/decompression benchmark, which is another useful test of a CPU's multi-core abilities. We knew going into this single-threaded test that the AMD chips weren't going to finish before the best that Intel has to offer. New York, Subscribing to a newsletter indicates your consent to our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Given the already high 180-watt TDP of the Threadripper chips, we wouldn't expect to get high sustained overclocked speeds without a similar cooling solution. So in effect, you lose 25 percent of your cores if you opt for the Threadripper 1920X over the higher-end Threadripper chip, but not a whole lot else. It sticks reasonably close to the top-end 1950X chip on many tests, while consistently besting the competing Core i9-7900X on core-hungry benchmarks, all while selling for a couple of hundred bucks less than either of those options. Just as with the lesser Ryzen chips, when we stepped up to 4K resolution (3,840x2,160), performance evened out, with the Threadripper 1920X, 1950X, and Core i9-7900X chips all turning in frame rates of 49fps. That said, as soon as you start moving down the pricing ladder, the current cost of compatible motherboards becomes more of an issue. And most recently, AMD's high-end Ryzen Threadripper platform has topped out at 32-thread capability with the $999-MSRP AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X. But when we initially fired up the two test titles we use for CPU benchmarking (Far Cry Primal and Rise of the Tomb Raider) and ran them on the higher-end Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, we didn't see any worse performance than exhibited by the company's Ryzen 7 chips. (We don't have an Epyc chip on hand to say for sure.) Intel Pentium G4560 vs AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X: 23. The quantity (and quality) of processing power is simply amazing these days.
